AB de Villiers continued to add his name to the record books with the fastest ODI 150 when he smashed an unbeaten 162 off 66 balls against the West Indies in Sydney.

AB de Villiers smashed the fastest 150 in ODI history.

The Proteas scored the highest team-total on Australian soil when they closed out their 50 overs on 408-5 after winning the toss and batting first. De Villiers was supported by Rilee Rossouw (61), Faf du Plessis (62) and Hashim Amla (65) as the South Africans looked to bounce back from their 130-run defeat to India last Sunday.

Quinton de Kock (12) hit Jason Holder (1-104) staight to Andre Russell at point after striking three boundaries. Amla and Du Plessis then set about steadying the ship with a 127-run stand for the second wicket. Chris Gayle (2-21) entered the fray and  had Du Plessis caught behind by Dinesh Ramdin. Two balls later Gayle was in action again, trapping Amla dead in front.

With South Africa teetering on 146-3 and two new batsmen at the crease, the idea of the Proteas reaching 280 were optimistic. But Rossouw and De Villiers added 134 for the fifth wicket off 12.3 overs as Rossouw smashed six boundaries and one six in 39 balls.

But it was the skipper who did most of the damage, scoring the second-fastest 50 in World Cup history, 52 balls, and then continued where he left off against the West Indies in South Africa by smashing eight maximums and 17 boundaries.

De Villiers now holds the records for the fastest 50, 100 and 150 in One Day International history. Chris Gayle will need to emulate something close to the innings he produced against Zimbabwe, when he scored 215, if the West Indies have any hope of picking up their third consecutive victory.
